In a matchup fans of the AuSable Valley girls basketball team were hoping to see, Kenny Rivers ended the first round of consolation matches against Anthony DiNardo of Irvington, a school know more as a Class B girls basketball dynasty.
In the first period, DiNardo got a takedown in the final 20 seconds of the stanza to give him a 2-0 lead heading into the second. He defended a Rivers escape attempt with a single.
In the second, Rivers chose the bottom position to start the period. He again stuffed an escape attempt by Rivers with a single early in the period, but Rivers was able to get away for a point with 50 seconds remaining in the period. DiNardo quickly countered with another takedown for a 4-1 lead with 40 seconds left. He received a stall warning at the 30 second mark and after the restart Rivers escaped to cut the lead to 4-2. The two remained standing for the rest of the period.
DiNardo started the third in bottom position, earning an escape nine seconds in for a 5-2 lead. The two remained standing with Rivers getting a point for a stall on DiNardo with 30 seconds left to cut the lead to 5-3. Di Nardo was called for stalling again, but the clock ran out with the Irvington wrestler getting the win.
