Lake George Village Zoning Board of Appeals members (left to right) Ron Mogren, Tom Sullivan and Mike Ravali listen to hotel owner Salim Amersi present a proposal Oct. 2 to demolish the main three-story building at his Surfside on the Lake resort and replace it with a six-story structure that includes 60 rooms atop a two-story parking garage.

There was considerable opposition early this year when the village board adopted a new zoning code that allowed buildings as tall as 72 feet high in selected spots in Lake George Village, but generally not on the east side of Canada Street near the lake. And now that a lakeside resort owner has asked for a variance to also build six stories, the outcry is more vocal.
