Dozens of people packed the Berkeley Green the evening of Friday, Aug. 31 to watch a couple short “Popeye” cartoons before seeing the main film, the original “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” during the third and final Outdoor Movie Night in Saranac Lake this summer. This village-led series of events was designed to attract people to the downtown business district. Popcorn was sold and candy and prizes were handed out, including round-trip airfare for two people to Boston aboard Cape Air, which flies out of the Lake Clear airport. The screening occurred feet away from the old Pontiac Theater, which was destroyed by fire in December 1978 is now a parking lot, and the Berkeley Theater (1988-2000), which is now occupied by Bear Essentials. Saranac Lake does not currently have a movie theater.
