DEC staff members have drafted a Unit Management Plan (UMP) that calls for the fire tower to be repaired for “Public Access and Communications” use. Under the plan, the tower would be maintained for full public access and include written interpretive materials that would be, “informative but not intrusive.”
The Johnsburg Town Board handled a number of issues at their Oct. 15 meeting in the Scout Hall, including land acquisition next to the town sand pit, the town budget and a resignation on the Planning Board.

Questions go unanswered
It was going to be 'showtime' for a capacity crowd of Thurman citizens Oct. 22 at a Meet the Candidates Night, but they were left hanging when one of the co-stars of a highly-anticipated political debate didn't show up — apparently due to an injury that required emergency surgery.

By a vote of 288-200, voters in the Village of Keeseville have approved the dissolution plan of the municipality. With the result, the village As of Dec. 31, 2014, there will be no more Village of Keeseville.
Voters will go to the polls from noon to 9 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Village Offices (58 Liberty St.) to determine the fate of the Keeseville Dissolution plan, which was accepted by the village board of trustees in July. A “yes” vote will accept the plan and lead to the dissolution of the incorporated municipality on Dec. 31, 2014. A “no” vote will defeat the plan, voiding the previous vote in February that favored dissolution by a tally of 268-176.
Supervisor Sharon Boisen said there would be no referendum on the Nov. 5 general election ballot asking voters to choose between the current three-member assessment board comprised of elected officials or consolidating the department into a sole, appointed position.
Essex County may be out of the running for one of three casinos planned to be built in New York in the next few years, but Chesterfield Supervisor Gerald Morrow believes there is still a way to bring gaming to the region.
During the APA meetings Oct. 10 and 11, the Regulatory Programs Committee first denied an appeal of Sunset Farm, Ltd. owner Daniel Arbour after confusion over the status of the application to use the property as a private airport. The committee then recommended that the application go through a public hearing.
Residents of the town voted 245-148 Oct. 16 in favor of a town resolution eliminating the town justice position currently held by Robert Minogue. That will leave Dan Deyoe as the lone town justice, overseeing cases at the Au Sable Forks Community Center Monday nights.
15 North Country World War II veterans, some bent with age, one standing with the help of a walker, straightened with pride and offered a crisp military salute to the flag. This was the opening volley of the send-off ceremony Oct. 12 for the most recent trip by North Country Honor Flight to the Washington D.C.’s World War II Memorial, Iwo Jima Monument, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers at the Arlington National Cemetery.
