Independence Day Celebration | Westport Column

Along with the other exciting festivities — the Parade, the Ice Cream Social, the Pig Roast, the Square Dancing, and the Fireworks, all on Saturday, July 5 — Westport’s Independence Day Celebration has a new twist this year.

If your house is in Westport, you are invited to put the “home” back in “homeland” by decorating it in a patriotic theme, with first, second and third-place winners to be announced at parade time.

Call Sheila at 962-8909 by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 4 if you wish to take part, and be sure to tell her if you’re using lights. Judges will make the rounds Friday evening for those using lights and Saturday morning for others. You’re also invited to sell arts, crafts and homemade goodies on Library Lawn during the festivities at no charge.

Call Sheila for that, too.

The Parade begins at 5 p.m. (entrants should line up at the Fairgrounds at 4:30), followed by the Fire Department Pig Roast and the Christopher Hallowell Fund Ice Cream Social at 6 p.m. in Ballard Park.

After the ice cream is handed out (down by the Performance Pavilion) the comedy juggling act of Stephen Gratto and Sons will keep young and old alike in stitches with their hilarious routines, which involve a lot of audience participation and improv.

Then at 7 p.m. it’s the toe-tapping tunes of Gary Phinney at the Street Square Dance, followed by terrific Fireworks down by the waterfront. They are still looking for donations to help pay for the Fireworks this year. You can drop a check in one of the boxes at local businesses or with Sheila at the Town Hall. (Where would we be without Sheila?)

On Sunday, July 6, the Plein Air Art Event kicks off with Free Finger Painting for Kids in Ballard Park from 9 a.m. to noon. More on upcoming Plein Air events next week.

Our “Thursday Bookends” for July 10: in the morning, for “Thursdays on the Trail with Charlotte,” you’re invited to join CATS summer intern Charlotte Staats in scouting out possible new trails in Willsboro. Meet at the Sportsmen’s Diner at 9 a.m. And the July 10 Soundwaves concert in Ballard Park at 7:30 p.m. features singer/songwriter Ryan Montbleu, with Jay Fiegl opening.
