Community service

This week, America celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. His noble and self sacrificing accomplishments on behalf of African Americans are legendary. Dr. King stood defiantly in the face of United States government supported segregation. He made himself the target of thousands of threats against him and his family. Dr. King prophetically acknowledged that he would not live to see the freedoms in America that he helped to achieve. A snipers bullet cut his life short and it is on Martin Luther King Day that we acknowledge his accomplishments and sacrifices.

As ordinary citizens there are so many opportunities for you and your children to give to your local community in honor of Dr. King’s selfless acts of years gone by. It’s important to teach your children that giving to your community is a worthwhile activity. Volunteer together as a family. Choose a group or topic that you wish to support. Have a discussion as a family which charity or more you would like that to be. Then decide how you would like to support that entity. Can you give of your time or resources or both? This would be a great opportunity to discuss finances with your children. Help your children save some of their money for charitable work. This will help instill a life-long attitude of service for others.

Remember, all kids count.
