Minerva central custodian arrested on charges of sex abuse and endangering

— William C. Smith of Olmstedville was arrested on July 16 as the result of two separate investigations.

Details of the arrest were not made immediately available by State Police.

In a statement issued by police July 30, Smith is alleged to have had sexual relations with both an 8 and 5-year-old females, and was charged with two felony counts of first-degree sexual abuse, a felony charge of criminal sexual act and two misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child.

Smith is a custodian at Minerva Central School, however, according to State Police the alleged victims were not children he met through his employment with the district.

Phone calls to school administration were not returned at press time in regard to this matter.

Smith was arraigned in front of the town of Minerva Justice Arthur Liberty and upon recommendation of Essex County District Attorney was remanded to the Essex County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.
