Rouses Point There’s a new place to get pizza in the Northern Tier, since the summer opening of Nico’s Pizza on Lake Street, in the heart of the village’s downtown section.
James Peralas and Chuck Kimble, both veteran pizza makers from Plattsburgh, with 26 years experience between them, realized that they had done and seen it all in the pizza business. They felt it was time to go into business for themselves.
“We knew every aspect of the business, we had run and managed businesses, so we decided to make our own money, instead of making money for someone else,” said Peralas.
Nico’s opened Aug. 16, and so far business has been very good. With limited inside seating, Nico’s specializes in take-out and delivery. Deliveries are available during the entirety of their business hours, and they will deliver to the Town of Champlain to the west, and into Chazy to the south. There is also outdoor seating available while the weather holds up.
“We didn’t want to compete in Plattsburgh with businesses we’ve worked at. There is only one other restaurant who does similar stuff as us (in Rouses Point),” said Peralas.
Nico’s features nine types of specialty pizzas, such as mac and cheese and michagans, which have been doing exceptionally well. They also have pasta, hot and cold subs, wraps, chicken wings and burgers.
Peralas and Kimble saw Rouses Point as a small community which was under served, and so far have been more than happy with their choice.
“We couldn’t have picked a better place to be. These people in this community are really good people,” said Perales.
Business has been very strong so far. If it stays at this rate, Peralas and Kimble would consider expanding in the future. At the very least they would like to add more seating capacity to their restaurant.
The name Nico’s, Perales said, came from an army buddy of his. He had a son named Dominic, who everyone called Nico.
“He didn’t live very long, and I’m really close to the family, so we decided to name the business after him.”
