Sap workshops scheduled

— With support from the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program, a series of workshops will take place this September and October to highlight research on sap yields from utilizing different spouts and droplines.

There has been a lot of developments and experimentation in recent years to determine what type of spout will produce the greatest amount of sap. Replacing droplines on a regular basis can also boost sap yields, yet the magnitude of the benefit and the frequency at which the droplines should be changed remains uncertain. The workshops will provide an overview of research highlights and provide participants with useful guidelines for how to improve sap yields and profitability through cost effective spout and dropline replacement techniques. The workshops will be led by Michael Farrell, Director of The Uihlein Forest- Cornell University’s Maple Syrup Research & Extension Field Station in Lake Placid.

The Lake Placid Workshop will be held Sept. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. The workshop will also feature a presentation on 2013 maple sap research trials, a maple-themed dinner at Heaven Hill Farm compliments of Chef David Hunt from Generations Restaurant in Lake Placid, and a sugarbush tour of Cornell University’s Uihlein Forest. Meet at Cornell University’s Uihlein Forest at 4 p.m. for a tour of the sugarbush and research trials, then move up to Heaven Hill Farm for dinner and presentation of research results.
