Plattsburgh Ashley’s Furniture is a brand and a model most people are familiar with as a mainstream American furniture store. But in Plattsburgh, the downtown business and a newly opened outlet, is an original family-owned business.
Howard Pirofsky opened his business at 48 Margaret Street in 1993. The store, called Affordable Furniture, carried on the four-story building’s tradition as a furniture store.
Howard’s son, Sam, who manages the store and works as a salesman, said the building has been home to various furniture stores during the past 50 years.
The Pirofsky family decided to move from Affordable Furniture to the nationally recognized chain to bring a top of the line furniture selection to the downtown Plattsburgh area.
“It’s nice having our business downtown, we play off a lot of restaurants, in the summer people are always walking around coming in from the farmers market and lately First Weekend,” Sam said. “We realize shopping for furniture is not something people typically enjoy doing but we offer a no pressure atmosphere, we’ll greet our customers, ask if they have any questions and then let them explore all we have here.”
The store has four stories with each level spread out in a mix of bedroom, living room, and dining room furniture. It’s all displayed in a cozy home-like setting with photos on the walls, accent lighting and lamps scattered through for people to browse.
“It’s really a big space, four floors all set up like you would see in a home with sets matched together and various home accessories throughout the store,” Sam said. “It isn’t cookie cutter in here.”
