LAKE GEORGE Controversy is likely to be aired tonight in a public meeting regarding the siting of a new boat launch on the east side of Million Dollar Beach.
The meeting is intended primarily to outline the pending project to reconstruct the Million Dollar Beach parking lot and the adjacent stretch of Beach Road with innovative porous pavement which is designed to allow stormwater to soak into the ground rather than run off the road and wash pollutants into the lake.
During preliminary excavations for the roadway, native American artifacts, believed to be up to 8,000 years old, were uncovered.
Some lakeside residents have objected to the construction of boat launch on the east side of the beach, citing noise and traffic near their shoreline properties.
The proposed launch would be within several hundred feet of a few private docks. The possibility the launch — and its boat-washing station —will be open 24 hours per day has also sparked concern.
The project includes drainage improvements, and traffic pattern changes — including the construction of a roundabout — that are intended to abate traffic snarls, backups and confusion.
The public meeting, to be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Lake George Town Hall, is to present the project plans, the results of the archeological investigation, and to hear comments from the public.
