Patriots set for regional title tilt with Voorheesville

The AuSable Valley girls varsity volleyball team scored a three-game sweep of the Plattsburgh High Hornets Nov. 2 to claim their fourth straight Section VII/Class C title. The Patriots face Voorheesville Nov. 9 with the winner to advance to the NYSPHSAA championships in Glens Falls.

— Knowing the opponent

The Section II/Class C champion Blackbirds feature three key players on their attack, with senior captain Caroline Bablin recording 234 kills on the season, followed by senior Tori Hargrave with 135 and junior Nicole Brower at 127. The trio is fed by senior captain Libby Bjork, who has recorded 466 assists on the season as the lone setter for Voorheesville.

From the service line, Bjork has fired 92 aces on the season, while Bablin has 43, Hargrave 33, Brower 29 and junior Kimmy McQuade 23. Over half of the Blackbirds service points come from the arms of Bjork (247), Brower (178) and Bablin (121).

Defensively, Hargrave leads the team with 198 digs, followed by 162 for Bjork, 156 for Bablin and 127 for Brower. Bablin leads the team at the net with 55 total blocks, while sophomore Elizabeth Bablin has 24 and Bjork added 16.

For the Patriots

AuSable Valley is led by the 178 kills of Noelle Miller on the attack, while Mirissa O'Neill adds 114 and Miranda Sheffer 97. O'Neill and Sheffer also provide the helpers in the Patriot's two-setter offense, with O'Neill recording 198 and Sheffer 192.

Sheffer leads the team with 91 aces on the season, followed by the 69 aces of Miller and 49 by O'Neill. Jocelyn Racette has also been strong from the service line with 36 aces on the season.

Defensively, Sheffer leads the team with 110 digs, while Miller has 91 and libero Alexandra Lincoln 86. Backup libero Lizzie Maloney, who played the position for the better part of a month while Lincoln recovered from injury, recorded 78 digs with Lindsay Brown adding 69.

Miller leads the Patriots with 14 blocks, including the match-winner for the sectional title.
