North Hudson The two officers involved in a high-speed chase that ended with the shooting of an Au Sable Forks man were identified yesterday evening by New York State Police officials.
Troop B Troopers Leston W. Sheeley and Marcia L. Pooler were identified by officials as the two officers who followed Howard J. “Joey” Aubin into the woods in North Hudson after his black 2005 Chevrolet Colorado truck was stopped with the use of spike strips at the end of a high-speed chase.
After following Aubin on foot, the officers attempted to apprehend him, but the scuffle escalated as attempts to physically restrain and use pepper spray on Aubin were ineffective.
Aubin then attempted to gain control of Pooler’s firearm, which led to Sheeley firing multiple shots at the suspect, who died at the scene. Authorities identified the weapon as a division-issued Glock .45-caliber G.A.P. (Glock Automatic Pistol).
During a press conference on the shooting March 6, Bureau of Criminal Investigation Capt. Robert LaFountain said that the preliminary investigation deemed the incident a “justifiable use of deadly force.”
An autopsy on the body was scheduled for the evening hours of March 6 at the Albany Medical Center by Dr. Michael Sikirica.
The incident remains under investigation by the Troop B Violent Crimes Investigation Team, Forensic Investigation Team, and Collision Reconstruction Team.
The incident began at approximately 5:07 p.m. when police attempted to stop Aubin, who was traveling southbound on Interstate 87, having been clocked at 95 mph, according to LaFountain.
The pursuit continued southbound until Aubin exited the Northway in Warren County and turned north on State Route 9 in Pottersville, continuing the chase through Schroon Lake and North Hudson. Spike strips were deployed just south of Liberty Road, causing the vehicle to become disabled. Aubin then fled into the woods, and a foot pursuit was initiated which ended in the shooting of the suspect.
