Aureus Winds to perform, visit local schools to work with students

— The Lake Placid Sinfonietta is pleased to welcome back Aureus Winds, a student woodwind quintet from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. This award winning quintet will be in Lake Placid to perform for the public on Sunday, March 17 at St. Eustace Church on Main St. in Lake Placid at 4 p.m.

The performance on Sunday, March 17 at St. Eustace if free, but donations will be accepted for the continuation of Lake Placid Sinfonietta’s educational programming and annual student award. There will be a complementary reception welcoming the students after the recital. Included in the performance will be an arrangement of “Three Preludes for Piano” by George Gershwin (arr. Menzel), “Tzigane” by Valerie Coleman, and “Quintet No. 2” by David Maslanka

On Monday and Tuesday, the ensemble will visit the Tupper Lake and Lake Placid area schools performing for students, holding master classes and visiting classrooms. The Aureus Winds were organized by Anne Harrow, Professor of Flute and Piccolo at the Eastman School and a longtime member of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta. They are now coached by Kenneth Grant, Professor of Clarinet at Eastman and principal clarinetist of the Rochester Symphony Orchestra. The group is dedicated to spreading music to all communities. The five members are: Tyler Menzel, flute; Zac Hammond, oboe; Kelsi Doolittle, clarinet; Kelly Suthers, horn; and Tom Doser, bassoon. The group performs at events in Rochester including being chosen to open the new concert hall at the Eastman School.

The Lake Placid Sinfonietta’s 2013 summer performance season will begin on July 4th with and run until Aug. 11. A complete list of concerts and programming will be released soon. For more information please visit the website at LakePlacidSinfonietta.org.
