Westport Column

The Firemen’s Golf Tournament, which was hosted by the Westport Country Club on June 1, was a great success, with sixteen teams of four competing in a day of outstanding golf. The Fire Department would like to thank all who took part, as well as the thirty hole sponsors and the numerous individuals and businesses who donated items for the raffle, including Jeff Crandall of Fort Bacon Adirondack crafts, whose quality Adirondack furniture was the centerpiece. A big thank-you also to the owners and staff of the Westport Country Club for their generous support of this important community event.

Congratulations to the Depot Theatre, which celebrates its 35th season this year. The season opens June 28 with Route 66, a new romantic musical comedy that celebrates the historic old highway that plays such a prominent role in our national identity. A quirky reporter from the big city teams up with a cowboy photographer for an article about it all, and they end up falling in love—both with each other, and with the highway’s rich history. Route 66 runs through July 14. The best way to enjoy Depot shows is to become a season subscriber, which gets you significant savings over the season, or you can buy single tickets as you go. For showtimes and tickets (including subscriptions), visit the Depot web site at depottheatre.org or call the box office at 962-4449.

Here’s a rare chance for members of the public to get some valuable training in EMS work, especially for those who love the great outdooors. Kevin Shaw, who owns Split Rock Outfitters and Guides of Wadhams, is also captain of Essex-Willsboro EMS squad as well as a Critical Care Advanced EMT, a Wilderness EMT, and a certified EMS instructor. Kevin will offer a class in Back Country First Aid at the Essex Fire House on Saturday, June 29, from noon to 4 p.m. The class is sponsored by Champlain Area Trails (CATS) of Westport. Class size is limited so register early. Call CATs at 962-2287 or visit their web site at champlainareatrails.com.

Congratulations to Glenn Estus and Mike Beauvais, winners of the first two Heritage House weekly $50 raffle drawings. Each week during the summer I’ll announce the winners in this column.
