LAKE GEORGE Following a successful kickoff last Saturday and Sunday, Lake George Winter Carnival is gearing up for its second weekend of 2013 — and event officials have high expectations.
Featured at the Carnival this weekend will be the hard-charging action of snowmobiles flying off berms and sliding around snaking curves as East Coast Snocross holds a series of races in the Charles Wood Park off West Brook Road.
Two weekends ago, East Coast Snocross held races in Lake George that were exceptionally popular, and they’ve been invited back for a repeat booking, carnival co-chair Linda Duffy said.
“They offered the crowd thrilling race action, and we’re glad they’re back in Lake George,” she said.
According to East Coast Race Director Fred Mang, this weekend’s races — the fifth round of a sanctioned championship series — were relocated from Belmont, New Hampshire due to warm weather there in contrast to favorable conditions in Lake George. Some of the leading snowmobile racers in eastern U.S. and Canada are expected to be competing, he said.
“We have a bunch of Canadians coming to race, and they’re high-caliber racers, which will definitely add to the show,” he said.
East Coast owner Bob Roscoe said that Lake George was ideal for racing, and they were happy with the large crowd they drew two weeks ago.
“Lake George is a spectacular venue — it has such a great atmosphere,” he said.
The fun doesn’t end with the careening, competing sleds this coming weekend.
On both Saturday Feb. 9 and Sunday Feb. 10, family fun includes children’s games outdoors from noon to 2 p.m. and craft activities inside and adult zumba sessions from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in King Neptune’s, ice diving demonstrations, a snowmobile water skip demonstration at 2:30 p.m., balloon and helicopter rides, a giant tubing slide, pony rides, chainsaw carving, and an alpaca zoo.
