Lake Placid The weekend will start with a slew of events at the Empire State Winter Games Saturday, Feb. 9, along with races at Mount VanHoevenberg as part of the 2013 Luge World Cup event.
Luge events begin with the first run in the men’s event at 9:15 a.m., followed by the second run at 10:45 a.m. The ESWG junior luge race will take place at noon, followed by the World Cup team relay race at 1 p.m. At 7 p.m., the World Cup and ESWG will come together in Mid’s Park in Lake Placid for an awards celebration and fireworks event.
At the Olympic Center, figure skating enters its third day with programs starting at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the day on the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena ice.
In the US Rink, the women’s hockey tournament continues at 8 a.m. with a game between New York City and Western. Other games include Long Island v. Central (9:35 a.m.); Hudson Valley v. Adirondack (11:10 a.m.); New York City v. Long Island (12:45 p.m.; Adirondack v. Central (2:20 p.m.); and Hudson Valley v. Western (3:55 p.m.).
On the 1932 rink, short track speedskating begins at 9 a.m. and runs through noon with qualifying races in the 1,000m open, 1,000m scholastic, 333m pre-scholastic, 500m open, 500m scholastic, 500m pre-scholastic, 1,500m open, 777m scholastic and 222m pew-scholastic events. On the Olympic Oval, long track speedskating will run from 1 to 4 p.m. with medal races in the 300m, 500m and 100m prescholastic events; the 800m, 500m and 100m scholastic events; and the 1,000m, 500m and 100m open events.
Adaptive alpine slalom races will take place at Whiteface Mountain starting at 10 a.m. and continuing through 2 p.m. The Giant Slalom alpine race will take place starting at 9 a.m., while skiercross, boardercross and adaptive time trails and finals will be held throughout the day at the Olympic Mountain in Wilmington, starting at 8 a.m. through 4 p.m.
At the Olympic Sports Complex, cross country and adaptive events begin at noon with the 20 km classic and 5 km classic events, with racing expected to run through 4 p.m. The Biathlon sprint race will begin at 9:30 a.m.
At Dewey Mountain in Saranac Lake, ski orienteering will start at 1 p.m. and last through 4 p.m.
