ESWG, Luge World Cup continues Friday

— With the opening ceremonies having been concluded, competition will ramp up in the second day of the Empire State Winter Games and World Cup Luge event in Lake Placid Friday, Feb. 8.

The figure skating competition will continue in the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena, with skating starting at 9 a.m. and running throughout the day.

Next door in the USA Arena, the womens hockey competition begins with games starting at 8 a.m. and featuring Central v. Western (8 a.m.); Long Island v. Adirondack (9:35 a.m.); Hudson Valley v. New York City (11:10 a.m.); Western v. Long Island (12:45 p.m.); Adirondack v. New York City (2:20 p.m.), and Central v. Hudson Valley (3:55 p.m.).

On the Olympic Oval, long track speedskating events start at 4 p.m. with the qualifiers in 300m pre-scholastic, 800m scholastic, 1,000 open, 500m pre-scholastic, 500m scholastic, 500m open, 100m pre-scholastic, 100m scholastic and 100m open.

On the slopes, the Super G alpine race will take place starting at 11 a.m. at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington. Also at Whiteface will be the training for the slopestyle, boardercross and adaptive events.

The 2.5km freestyle time trails will take place at Dewey Mountain in Saranac Lake starting at 6 p.m.

At the World Cup Luge at Mount VanHoevenberg, first runs begin at 10:30 a.m. in the doubles competition, followed by the second doubles run at noon. That will be followed by the first runs in the women’s event at 2 p.m., with the second run taking place at 3:15 p.m.
