Thanks for support

To the Valley News:

This year Westport has been fortunate to have a dynamic, fun group of Youth Commission members, an involved Town Board, supportive and generous local businesses and a phenomenal array of knowledgeable and willing community volunteers.

Westport could not offer the programs we do without the partnerships we have. At the root of the program are ordinary—and some extraordinary--taxpayers. Through the Town of Westport staff we receive funding, administrative services and encouragement. Additionally, Westport Central School, Camp Dudley and the Westport Heritage House provide the facilities we use. Their respective staffs take care of logistics we can’t provide ourselves. Chazy Westport Communications has made our website a go-to resource for local families. We are also grateful for the leadership of the Essex County Youth Bureau for serving as the base of youth activities and for keeping all the surrounding towns in communication.

As a community we are privileged to have literally dozens of top caliber coaches, referees, instructors and camp counselors. Some have supported us for decades and others are just starting out as important role models for our youth. They have collectively made more children smile than we will ever be able to count.

The biggest event of the year for Youth Commission is the soccer tournament we host. In September we hosted 44 teams, 11 towns, approximately 500 players and at least that many parents, grandparents and friends. We strongly encourage every visitor to the tournament to support our local businesses. The tournament also highlights each team and gives us the huge satisfaction of seeing how many other towns share our commitment to youth recreation.

This year 150 youth participated in our programs, a fantastic turnout. As the year comes to a close, we are more committed than ever to making sure our youth continue to be surrounded by positive experiences that make them happy and strong. Check out our website as we unveil new programs. Contact us and get involved. We love to have fun and we want your ideas.

To all who have contributed to Westport Youth Commission’s vitality and to all the young people near and far who have participated in our programs, we offer our sincerest thanks and wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous 2014.

On behalf of the Westport Youth Commission.
