Country Line Dancing class | Westport Column

Send your secondary-school child to school with a buck and some head gear on Friday, Dec. 20, which is Caps for Cranes day at WCS. For just a dollar, older students will be able to wear their hat or cap in school all day long. Proceeds will go to support Crane Mountain Valley Horse Rescue in Westport.

Did you know that the state has changed the process for filing your basic STAR exemption, and now you have to register with the Tax Department by Dec. 31 in order to get the exemption for 2014? Registration has to be done online. Go to tax.ny.gov and click where it says Learn More under the Register for STAR button on the right.

If you don’t have access to a computer and the Internet, the Westport Library Association and the Wadhams Free Library will both welcome you to use their free, public access computers. The friendly librarians there can also assist you in finding the website and filling out the forms.

In addition to his regular weekly classes on Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Westport Heritage House, dance teacher John Danyew has added a one-hour Country Line Dancing class from 6 to 7 p.m. Finally, a class for those who don’t have a partner! For those interested in the regular class, December is Quick Step (except for the Dec. 26, which is Holiday Dance) and January is East Coast Swing. For more information go to www.champlainvalleydance.com or call (802) 897-7500. At the website you can also see where else John is teaching in the Champlain Valley, just in case you’ve got happy feet.

And now that you’ve turned in your entries for the Champlain Area Trails (CATS) Photo and Caption Contest, you can vote for the People’s Choice Award winner and see the other finalists at the CATS web site, www.champlainareatrails.com. Hover over Contest, and a menu will offer the three categories, Scenic/Nature Finalists, Towns/Villages Finalists, and Trails Finalists. Photojournalist and university professor Paul Martin Lester will choose the Judge’s Prizes of first, second, and third. Winners will be announced in early January. And once you’ve voted, don’t forget to get out and enjoy those trails now that we’ve got some decent snow.
