— Huston said the 2013 Schroon Lake July 4th celebration will have two new surprises.

“I think people will be very pleased with both of them, especially the children,” she said. “But then we are all children at heart, right?”

In past years the celebration got under way with the Schroon Lake Community Church’s chicken barbecue beginning at 11 a.m. The church is located in the center of town on US Route 9.

Activities in the town park have included children’s games and events, the Town of Schroon Lions Club food tent and a series of concerts.

Schroon’s traditional Fourth of July parade starts at 6 p.m. It proceeds from Hoffman Road north on Main Street to Fowler Avenue and onto Leland Avenue to town beach area.

At dusk the Word of Life Collegians perform a concert of patriotic music on the town beach that is followed by a fireworks display above Schroon Lake.

Throughout the day there are sales and special events by downtown merchants.
