Clintonville The AuSable Valley Central School Board of Education was faced with a maximum 4.4 percent state property tax levy cap threshold.
Instead, they decided to go lower, voting April 17 to adopt a 2013-14 spending plan that would only raise the tax levy 3.8 percent, or $458,460.
“We are remaining with our current staffing levels, programs and services,” AuSable Valley Superintendent Paul Savage said. “We received some additional state aid that helped us to close the gap.”
Savage said that the district about $815,000 in additional state aid from their previous runs.
“We were pleased to receive some additional aid and that the Legislature stepped up,” Savage said.
With the increase, voters will be faced with a $12,523,222 tax levy for the 2013-14 rolls, up from $12,064,762 raised in 2012-13. The levy would go toward a $29,677,914 spending plan.
“This was a good team effort to find some ways to have savings and evaluate our programs so we can be the most efficient,” Savage said. “We have had to decrease positions over the years and we are at a level of staffing where we can continue to offer our quality academic programs.”
Under the adopted budget, Savage said that the estimated tax rate would be 16.64 per $1,000 of assessed property value.
The board had previously looked over several options to trim potential deficits, but were able to trim more from the preliminary numbers.
“The numbers that we have in March are so preliminary that we are just looking at the options,” Business Manager Scott Brow said.
The adopted budget also calls for 375,000 in fund balance to be used.
“We are projected to have $600,000 remaining in fund balance at the end of the school year, and that is where we wanted to come in at,” Savage said.
The board of education will hold the annual budget public hearing Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m., with the annual budget vote taking place Tuesday, May 21, from noon until 9 p.m. in the Middle/High School cafeteria.
