Two set to run for vacated Elizabethtown council seat

— In the wake of the resignation of Elizabethtown councilman Ken Fenimore, there will be a local election Nov. 6.

Two candidates, Elizabethtown planning board member Evelyn Hatch and former councilman Michael McGinn, have filed petitions with the Essex County Board of Elections to fill the remainder of Fenimore’s term, which ends Dec. 31, 2013.

“Whoever wins the election will have to run again next year since the term is expiring,” Supervisor Margaret Bartley said. “This election will fill the position for the remainder of the current term.”

Hatch ran last year for one of two seats that were open on the Elizabethtown board, one of which was vacated when McGinn decided that he would not seek re-election.

Until the election, Bartley said that the seat held by Fenimore, who resigned in protest over how he felt Bartley was conducting town business, would remain vacant until after the election.

“At the Sept. 18 meeting, the board chose not to appoint anyone else because the timing is so close to the election,” Bartley said.

Bartley said that until then, the board will conduct business with herself and three councilmen.

“We are just going to move forward,” she said. “We have a lot on our plate.”
