— Motorists on I-87 Northway between exits 7 and 8A are likely to incur traffic backups during upcoming weekends through October, due to the first phase of a $29 million bridge-repair project.

The “twin bridges” extending between Cohoes and Clifton Park will be subjected to deck replacement, and through October only one lane will be open in each direction on weekends.

Initial work began after Labor Day weekend to replace the decks on the Thaddeus Kosciusko bridge over the Mohawk River.

More than 100,000 commuters, long distance travelers and trucks use bridges each day. State transportation officials say that the money spent now boosts the bridges’ lifespan and will save taxpayers money in the long term.

Deck replacement on the Northbound span began Friday, Sept. 7 with one lane handling traffic for each direction on the southbound span. Work will continue over six weekends excluding Columbus Day weekend. The southbound lane is to be reconstructed next spring, with one-lane traffic each direction carried by the northbound span.

Weekend traffic delays are expected to be significant; real-time images of traffic conditions can be monitored at: www.511NY or: www.twin.bridges@dot.ny.gov. Motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes for crossing the Mohawk River, such as the bridge carrying Route 32 over the river between Cohoes and Waterford, or the Rexford Bridge carrying Route 146 between Niskayuna and Clifton Park.
