Police make an arrest in flair gun shootings

A Plattsburgh man has been arrested for Reckless Endangerment after setting off four flares over the past week in Plattsburgh and the surrounding area.

Cory M. Burdo, age 21, of Plattsburgh, is being charged with four counts of Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree and five counts of Criminal Mischief 4th Degree for his involvement in the recent flare gun shooting incidents.

According to a press release issued by the New York State Police, Burdo is being processed for the charges and will be arraigned later on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The investigation is ongoing and further arrests are possible.

Burdo was arrested by New York State Police in Plattsburgh for his alleged involvement in several incidents where a flare gun was used to shoot at residences, a camper, and a lighted construction sign.

On Sept. 5, Fuller Construction reported having a lighted sign on Military Turnpike in the vicinity of Salmon River Road struck and damaged by a flare fired from a flare gun. On Friday, there was no damage to the sign and on Monday morning the sign was not functioning properly. The damage was noticed on Wednesday and appeared to be caused by a flare gun strike.

Trooper Joshua Jenkins with the New York State Police out of Plattsburgh said the Department of Transportation signs can run between $15,000 to $20,000.

There have been several incidents in the City of Plattsburgh and surrounding areas.

The first reported incident took place on Sept. 2. A flare gun was discharged at a pull-behind trailer parked in the Sam's Club parking lot in Consumer Square in Plattsburgh.

According to police the flare propelled through both windows and extinguished on the parking lot pavement. No one was injured as a result of this incident.

A dark colored van was seen by surveillance cameras pull up in the vicinity of the camper and a flare was seen being shot from the van.
