Massive police response to Altona ends peacefully

— Altona man Dennis Provost, 57, was taken into custody by state police March 27 under the state Mental Health Law.

At approximately 2:20 p.m., state police in Ellenburg responded to 5817 State Route 190/Military Turnpike in the town of Altona to check the welfare of Provost of that address. Provost became agitated and ordered the trooper off the property. At one point, Provost fired two rounds into the air. At no time did the Trooper feel Provost was firing at him.

Other New York State Police Members responded to assist including crisis negotiators, the Special Operations Response Team, State Police Aviation, uniform and BCI personnel.

A perimeter was established and a crisis negotiator responded to the residence to engage Provost in conversation. Members of Provost's family and other surrounding residences were evacuated.

After approximately three hours of negotiation, Provost was taken into custody under the New York State Mental Health Law by Special Operations and transported to CVPH by the Clinton County Sheriff's Department for a mental health evalution.

Also assisting at the scene was the US Border Patrol, Department of Homeland Security Aviation, and the SUNY Plattsburgh Police Department.
