WARRENSBURG A youth group based at Holy Cross Church is planning a work mission trip this summer,
The group plans to go to Charleston, West Virginia to help the elderly, jobless and homeless, according to Lydia Hayes, who is among the teens participating in the mission trip.
The work includes various tasks, likely to include home fix-up, working in a soup kitchen and visitations in a nursing home.
Last year, four members of the youth group embarked on a mission trip to Harrisburg Pa., and the work focused on helping the homeless.
Their six-day trip last June included weeding a garden from which vegetables were donated to a homeless shelter, distributing clothing and other necessities directly to the homeless in urban Harrisburg, and assembling packages of donated items for those in critical need.
Participating in the trip were Lydia and Ian Hayes, Megan Pierce and Kayla Sweet.
These four teenagers will be going on this summer's youth mission trip, accompanied by newcomers Bailey and Chance Peters, Lydia Hayes said.
“Many teens may complain about how bad they have it, but last year's mission trip made us realize we have it so much better than many others,” she said. “Working with the homeless made us understand that so many people can use help, and yet they're not getting the help they need.”
The group held a 1950s-themed dinner Saturday March 24 as a fundraiser for this mission trip. Entertainment included dinner music featuring popular hits of the 1950s, including selections from Elvis, Sinatra, Johnny Cash.
