Lake Placid pedestrian killed by car

— A Lake Placid man died the evening of Friday, March 9 after being hit by car while walking along State Route 86, according to State Police at Troop B in Ray Brook.

A pedestrian, Albert Scavo, 66, of Lake Placid, was walking westbound on the north shoulder of Route 86 around 6:29 p.m. when it appears that Scavo attempted to cross to the south shoulder and was struck by a 2007 Toyota corolla operated by Jake M. Bell, 28, of Mexico, N.Y. Bell was driving eastbound and had one front-seat passenger, Danielle M. Phelps, 23, of Fulton.

Scavo was transported to Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid, where he was pronounced dead by Physician's Assistant Delina Fajrdo. The Essex County District Attorney's office was notified.

On March 10, 2012, an autopsy was performed by Dr. C. Francis Varga at AMC-Saranac Lake, and he determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma consistent with being struck by a motor vehicle. The manner of death was determined to be accidental. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
