Chili cook off to aid Schroon Lake EMS

The inaugural Schroon Lake Chili Cook Off will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mountainside Bible Chapel. The event will benefit the Schroon Fire Department.

“I’ve competed in chili cook offs before and, in addition to being able to do something during a long, cold winter, they are just a lot of fun,” said Shelby Davis, who is organizing

the cook off. “When I thought about who could be the beneficiary of the event, I automatically thought about the fire department and EMS squad — fire departments and chili go hand in hand in my book. The Schroon Lake EMS squad is a volunteer team, and the money raised will go towards training, equipment and uniforms.”

The Schroon Lake ambulance service is a part of the Schroon Lake Fire Department.

“We are looking for restaurants, churches, businesses, non-profits and individuals to enter their chili — the competition is open to everyone,” Davis said. “This would be a great event for first-time chili cooks.

“The rules are very simple,” she added. “Everything has to be homemade with no use of spice mixes or canned chili products. Cooks are asked to bring three gallons of their chili for tasting.”

Since the cook off is a public event, all state Department of Health regulations apply. That means the chili must be prepared in a licensed commercial kitchen.

“If a home cook wants to enter and doesn’t have access to a commercial kitchen, I can help connect them with one,” said Davis, who owns and operates Mr. P’s Mountain Smokehouse along with Chris Palmatier. “All of the cook off rules and health department guidelines are also available on the chili cook off website.”
