— Members of the Westport Central School community came together recently to help out two of their own.

A week after a fire gutted the home where senior Alex Steele and his sophomore sister Moira lived, the classmates of the two students came together to donate money from their respective fundraising accounts to go toward helping the family get back on their feet.

The senior class donated $1,000 to the family, while the sophomore class donated $550 from the proceeds of their recent carnation sales. Also, the school collected over $500 in donations made by those attending the final two varsity basketball home games of the season.

“We discussed what had happened to Alex and his family and the class decided to take $1,000 from their fundraising and donate it to the family,” senior class advisor Jack Thompson said. “We purchased numerous gift certificates they could use for supplies and presented them to the family.”

“I thought that this was wonderful,” sophomore class advisor Cheryl Phillips said. “We had a class meeting to figure out what to do for the family and they decided to give the proceeds from the carnations sales which they had just gotten done with.”

Both advisors said that they were proud of the students.

“This was a good money-earner for the class,” Phillips said. “It’s heartwarming that they would do this for one of their own. It’s amazing how they all come together.”

“They have worked hard for their fundraising for the last four years,” Thompson said. “Whenever they have needed to come together as a class, they have. They have worked hard together to do things for the community and for each other.”
