ALBANY Beekmantown senior wrestler Hayden Head scored his third pin in as many matches to advance to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s 285-lbs. championship match Feb. 25.
Head scored the fall at the 4:18 second mark of the semifinal match against Matt Montesanti of Medina, earning a trip to the state championship match against Alex Soutiere of Ravena-Coyemans-Selkrik, an unranked wrestler who scored a late win over top seed Kacee Sauer.
“He has wrestled the whole year pretty aggressive,” Beekmantown head coach Len Gadway said. “He has been here before and he is not making the mental mistakes. He has an excellent shot.”
“I am going to go out, be aggressive and do what I normally do,” Head said about the finals. “This has been my goal since I started wrestling, and I have worked hard for this my whole high school career.”
Peru’s Troy Seymour (170) and Saranac’s Ben Perry (195) lost their respective semifinal matches, and will wrestle for a spot on the podium in the consolation rounds. Peru’s Jacob Goddeau will also look for a podium spot in the consolation rounds at 132-lbs.
We will have more throughout the day on the Denpubs, North Countryman and Burgh websites and on Facebook and Twitter.
The NYSPHSAA wrestling championship matches start at 6 p.m. tonight (Feb. 25).
