Workshop set at Essex County IDA

— Two local organizations are looking to help those seeking to start a new business.

The North Country Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Plattsburgh State University along with the Essex County IDA are co-sponsoring a workshop for individuals who are thinking about starting their own business.

“We do this all the time,” Karen Stehlin of the SBDC said. “This is part of the mission of our organization and we are always talking to people that are looking to start a business.”

Anybody can attend the workshop and there will be another one later in the month in Malone on March 22. There will also be a workshop in Plattsburgh, with a date to be announced.

Stehlin said that the SBDC works with people in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton and northern Washington counties, and deals with the information that those who are seeking to start a business need to know before hanging up an “Open for Business” sign.

“A lot of people want to do it correctly and will usually reach out,” Stehlin said. “A lot of our clients are referrals from different agencies. We’re there to help them every step of the way. We work with new business as well as established businesses.”

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Essex County IDA office located at 7566 Court St., Elizabethtown.

Stehlin said that prospective business owners will learn about legal requirements, business entities, writing a business plan and financing options available to new businesses.

Those who are interested in the workshop can register through the SBDC by calling 564-2042, or email at sbdc@plattsburgh.edu. More information is available at www.northcountrysbdc.org.
