Keene There will be several new faces when Keene Central School opens its doors for the first day of classes, starting with the principal.
Dan Mayberry, who had been an administrator in the neighboring Lake Placid Central School District, will welcome students Thursday, Sept. 6.
“For me, this has been fantastic,” Mayberry said. “This is a wonderful place. It is a great small school, family atmosphere where everyone in the community is supportive of each other.”
Mayberry will oversee the day-to-day educational operations at the school, while former Superintendent Cynthia Ford-Johnston has signed on part time.
Mayberry said that the preparations for the new school year are “coming along nicely” and that the community and students will have the chance to prepare themselves at the back-to-school night Wednesday, Sept. 5, starting at 3:45 p.m.
“It will be a chance for the students to meet their teachers and get their schedules for the school year,” Mayberry said. “There is a dinner planned, and we will introduce the new members to the school family. It’s a great chance to kick off the school year and get the students ready to walk in to school on Thursday ready to go.”
Along with meeting new staff members, Mayberry said that people will have a chance to meet the six foreign exchange students that will be calling Keene home during the school year.
“It’s a very unique opportunity that we and the host families are looking forward to,” Mayberry said. “We have students coming to us from Brazil, Norway, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.”
Mayberry said that, overall, he was looking forward to the new school year.
“I expect that this year will go very well,” he said. “We are going to build upon the great things that we have already done in Keene and have a positive year as we take care of bringing in the two big initiatives with Common Core curriculum and the Dignity for All, which will become a part of our everyday life here.”
