Elizabethtown-Lewis Central starts school year of transition

— The Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School District will open its doors with changing leadership.

Teacher Cheryl Hutchins will be the interim principal and former Peru Superintendent A. Paul Scott is serving as the interim until a new, full-time superintendent is hired later this year.

“We have had a productive summer,” Scott said. “The board will be moving ahead with the superintendent/principal search and it intends to adhere to its timetable.”

While the school is transitioning in leadership, Scott said a successful school year for the students is the top priority.

“We want to make sure that we have a smooth start to the school year,” Scott said. “A lot of people have come to us and said that they feel comfortable that will happen during this transition, especially when we announced Cheryl taking on the interim principal role, so we feel good about being ready to start the year.”

Scott said that the year will also start with the annual back to school picnic, which will take place Friday, Sept. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the school.

Students return to school Wednesday, Sept. 5, which will be a half day of school with students being released at 11:30 a.m.

Scott said that other information on the new school year, including cafeteria prices and forms for the free and reduced price meal program, are available with the recently released school newsletter.

“First and foremost, we are looking for a successful launch of our classes,” Scott said. “We are going to be rolling out higher expectations for student conduct in the classroom and each teacher is being called upon to expect that increased civility in the classroom. Our hope is that parents will support these higher expectations in their household and with their children.”

Scott said that his other goal is to make sure that the person who takes his place in December will be ready to hit the ground running.

“I have full confidence that we will be ready for the next person and the transition will be an exciting one for the school community, and I am here to fully support that,” Scott said.
