— The Barking Spider Black Widows and Black Mountain Diamonds faced off on Tuesday, Aug. 14 for the Adirondack Women’s Softball League championship game. The Black Widows came out on top with a score of 7-5.

The teams, both of which call North Creek their hometown, faced off at the Ski Bowl. The game began at 6:30, and the Black Widows established an early lead. The Diamonds managed to keep the Black Widows from scoring for any more points for the majority of the game, but could not close the gap before the game ended.

Eight teams make up the Adirondack Women’s Softball League. Inlet, Raquette Lake and Indian Lake each have a team. Speculator has two, and North Creek has three. Representatives from each team design the season’s schedule, which runs over the course of the summer, and culminates in a championship match during August. Teams played on Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m.

“Everyone in the league is playing with heart and passion,” said Sheri Mueller, first basemen for the Black Mountain Diamonds. “It’s something they are doing because they love it. That makes the sport much more fun.”

Each team operates a little bit differently. Some have volunteer coaches, while others rely on team captains and communal decision making to decide player positions and batting order. Teams are sponsored by a local inn or pub, which provide the players with uniform T-shirts and free drinks after games. Each team is responsible for buying their equipment and other costs, however. The league usually holds a 50/50 raffle to offset costs.

Though the Adirondack Women’s Softball League season ended last week, many of the league’s players are trying to form a co-ed softball league for the fall. The fall season is tentatively scheduled for mid September to the early November.
