Montpelier wastewater plant breached by flooding

MONTPELIER, Vt. - City of Montpelier officials report that its wastewater treatment plant has been flooded and pollutants are escaping into floodwater. Montpelier officials are asking residents and those who work in the city to practice "extreme water conservation" by avoiding any water use if at all possible.

Everyone is also reminded to minimize contact with and never drink any floodwater because of pollutants like these or other contaminants like fuels or fertilizers that could run into waterways during floods.

State offices in Caledonia, Orange, and Washington counties are closed until further notice:

Due to weather conditions, State offices in Washington, Caledonia, and Orange counties have been authorized to operate on a reduced workforce status for all shifts on May 27, 2011. State offices in all other counties should now be open. Employees who are affected by the reduced workforce status during this period will not suffer a loss of pay or benefits.

Call 2-1-1: Those homeowners who have suffered damage in the most recent floods are asked to call 2-1-1 to report that damage.
