Vets to hold Memorial Day events

NORTH CREEK-Several events will be held in the region this Memorial Day weekend to honor veterans, including parades, concerts and an appearance by state Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, R-Willsboro.

In North Creek, the annual Memorial Day parade and service will start at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30 at the Johnsburg Central School (JCS), where the school band will proceed to the veterans memorial on Main Street, according to Terry Waterston, commander of American Legion Post 629, sponsor of the day's activities. The rain site will be the school gym, she said.

North Creek Boy Scout Troop 36 will lead the parade, and scoutmaster Paul Sears - U.S. Army Sgt. First Class, retired - will be the master of ceremonies. The guest speaker will be Daniel Neal, U.S. Navy Lt. Commander, retired.

JCS senior Cassandra Prouty will sing the national anthem. The band will be under the direction of Jonathan DeLappa, and the flag corps will be under the direction of music teacher Mary Leach. The Rev. Wayne Schoonmaker will give the invocation/benediction.

Following the service, there will be a gathering at the North Creek Volunteer Fire Department, where refreshments will be served.

Long Lake

There will be celebrations throughout the day on May 30 in the town of Long Lake. The Memorial Day Parade begins at 8:30 a.m. at the town hall and ends at the cemetery, where a service will be held to honor fallen U.S. soldiers. The parade and service are sponsored by the American Legion Post 650.

In the afternoon, veterans from around the region will take part in the annual Hamilton County Memorial Day Parade, held this year in Long Lake on May 30. The parade starts at 2 p.m., beginning at the Long Lake Town Hall and ending at the Mt. Sabattis Park. Veterans groups from around the county take part, including members of the American Legion Parker-Benton Post 1392 in Indian Lake.
