Church plans activities in observance of Memorial Day

CROWN POINT - The friends and members of First Congregational Church of Crown Point (Church in the Park) will mark Memorial Sunday with two events during this weeks' service.

Of great importance will be the observance of Memorial Day and the sacrifice that so many of our men and women made to ensure the freedoms that we, as a nation, enjoy. More than a "right," this is a privilege that has been purchased by the commitment of our armed forces. This day, originally referred to as "Decoration Day," was established to remind a nation that "freedom has a price." Communities were encouraged to "decorate" the grave stones of those fallen heroes that gave their all.

The service will also mark the dedication of the trees that have been and will continue to be planted around the historic church "In the Park" of Crown Point.

Three years ago, the ancient maple trees that had framed the old Brick Church for more than 200 years, sadly, had to be removed due to age and deterioration. This year, church members have and will continue to plant deciduous trees that will once again enhance and restore the beauty of that corner of the park. The congregation is pleased with the many contributions of trees and dedications made for many of our "newest additions" in the names of valued family members.

Church members believe that not only will these trees bring about beauty but they will also bring glory to God; they represent his love and splendor.

The Service will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is open to all.
