4-H Clubs compete in state contest

CHESTER - Fifty-four Vermont 4-H club members competed at this year's State 4-H Horse Judging Contest with the four highest-scoring seniors earning the chance to compete again at the national level.

The May 7 event, hosted by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension and Windham County 4-H, was split between two locations. The 4-Hers, divided by age groups, judged both performance and conformation classes at the Winchester Stables in Newfane followed by an afternoon of oral reasons and educational programs at Leland and Gray Union High School, Townshend.

Top scorers in the senior division (ages 14 to 18) selected for the state 4-H horse judging team include (in order of placement) Emi Schweikert, Underhill; Meaghan Hughes, Jericho; Alli Bachmann, Ira; Mariah Harding, Barre. The team will compete at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Round-up in Louisville, Ky., Nov. 4-6.

Other winners, by division, were:

Novice Senior (for teens 14 to 18 years old who are new to 4-H or first-time competitors in this contest): Caitlyn Kerrigan, Burlington; Stephanie Knight, Burlington; Karli Knapp, Townsend; Makayla Ferguson-Reid, Castleton; Katie Bridger, Burlington.

Junior (8 to 11 years old): Catherine Thrasher, Rupert; Arin Kenyon, Chester; Audrey Teague, Jeffersonville; Natalie Malmgren, Jericho.
