A large number of those who spoke during the meeting were shopkeepers. Some said their businesses had seen a downturn since the parking area was closed last year.
Some residents differed on whether or not the village should provide free or metered parking, but no one spoke out against leasing the lot.
Village Mayor Clyde Rabideau acknowledged the importance of reopening the parking lot for the community, but asked the public to respect the village's interest in negotiating on the terms, which include costs that would put the village well over $2,000 a month.
Trustee Jeff Branch suggested that business owners pitch in a share of the cost. Other trustees expressed an interest in purchasing the lot outright rather than leasing it, and said they would request an updated appraisal of the property.
