TICONDEROGA-A community group has stepped up to assist the Ticonderoga Festival Guild.
The Ti Knights of Columbus will host an Italian dinner Friday, May 27, at 6 p.m. Proceeds will go to the guild for an additional event this summer. Tickets are $10 a person.
"Knowing that the guild had cut its evening schedule, the Knights have offered a fund raiser to pay for a fourth concert on Aug. 2, when the Hague Jazz Quartet will perform at their (Knights) pavilion," explained Cathie Burdick, guild executive director.
Faced with dwindling resources, the Ticonderoga Festival Guild will present a much different arts program this summer.
The guild will scale back its weekly concert series in order to retain its children's Arts Trek program.
"The Arts Trek programs capture the attention and imagination of thousands of area children," Burdick said. "We feel that an ongoing program that brings out 250-300 people each week is a valuable one. The board of directors is determined to keep this program going."
The local arts group is not receiving funding from the New York State Council on the Arts this year. That's a loss of $4,000 for the Ti Festival Guild, which has provided weekly summer evening concerts the past 30 years. It has offered weekly children's arts programs the past 28 years.
The 2011 guild season will kick off June 30 with the annual President's Party. This year's opening event will be a "Life Is Short, Eat Dessert First" dinner at Emerald's Restaurant at 5:30 p.m.
Following the dinner, Vince Gerardi will perform stand-up comedy. Tickets for the event which include dinner, tax, tip and entertainment will be $28. Reservations may be made at 585-7015 or by email at email@example.com
"2011, the 31st year of guild activity in Ticonderoga, is shaping up to be an interesting and exciting one," Burdick said. "The executive director always gets inspired when the planning begins. We hope people are also inspired to open their checkbooks and ensure that the children's programs continue in Ticonderoga."
