CASTLETON - Dr. Paul Albro, a respected and influential professor, provided the 2011 Castleton State College Commencement Address May 14.
The commencement was held on the Old Chapel Green with nearly 400 students receiving degrees. The address was also shown to an overflow audience on a large video screen in the Casella Theater.
Albro taught business administration at Castleton from 1977 until his retirement last December. Popular among students, he was known for courses that were engaging but challenging. His expectations were always high; his capstone class for seniors, Strategic Management or Policy, was legendary.
His influence on the college extended far beyond his own classroom. During his career, he served as department chair and president of the Faculty Assembly. His research led to a renewed emphasis on freshman advising and today's First-Year Seminar program. Always an advocate of clear writing, he served on the committee that drafted the college's Writing Standards.
Albro served bravely in Vietnam, and while a professor, was a volunteer fireman in both Castleton and Hubbardton.
