Lewis barn fire kills piglets, calf

LEWIS-A barn fire on Pulsifer Road in Lewis led to the loss of livestock and the barn itself late in the evening May 5.

Andrew Denton, who was using his parents' barn to house livestock, said that he lost 11 piglets and one calf in the fire.

"I got a call on my cell phone saying that the barn was on fire," Denton said. "We lost all of our baby pigs, a calf and some hay."

Denton's wife, Andrea, was treated for minor injuries on the scene.

"She was trying to see if we could get to any of the animals and got hurt," Andrew said.

Denton said that the family had six other cows that were not in the barn at the time of the fire.

Andrea thanked the firefighters who responded to the blaze.

"We would like to thank all the firemen who rushed to extinguish our barn. We appreciate your quick response time," she said.
