Rutland County Humane Society

PITTSFORD - Are you currently feeding stray cats? If so, the Rutland County Humane Society can help ease your mind and help these animals.

RCHS is helping communities around the county to locate areas where abandoned cats are living and to work with volunteers on a population control program called Trap-Neuter-Return, in which stray and feral cats are humanely trapped, vaccinated against rabies and sterilized.

Animals are then returned to their familiar habitats under the lifelong care of volunteers. If you know where these cats are living or want to learn more, please contact Jessica at 483-9171 or Jessica@rchsvt.org

Fido got skunked

There are two kinds of dogs when it comes to skunks and porcupines, those who learn after the first encounter and those who never learn.

Spring is here and wildlife is on the move. If your dog gets skunked here is a recipe to help remove the odor:

Mix in a medium sized bowl

•1 quart of (fresh, unopened) 3 percent hydrogen peroxide

•1/4 cup baking soda

•1 to 2 teaspoon of liquid dish soap or liquid hand soap

Protect the dog's eyes (you can apply mineral oil) and lather as you would shampoo, let sit for 7 to 10 minutes and rinse well. Apply immediately and do not close the container or store this mixture.

While we are talking about spring, don't forget heart worm and Lyme protection for your pets.

RCHS Lost and FoundDepartment

More lost animals come to the shelter when the weather gets warm.

Now that spring is here, check to make sure your pet has I.D. tags, secure collars and/or a microchip.

Also remember to update micro-chip information if you have moved.

If your pet does go missing, please call RCHS immediately, day or night at 483-9171. Our answering service ill provide information on finding your pet and relay the information to us.

We post pictures of incoming strays on our website www.rchsvt.org. Look for new animal adoption images in our column in next week's Outlook.
