Officials say Lows Dams are in good shape

Responding to rumors that two dams above Tupper Lake are in poor shape, environmental officials say the Upper and Lower Lows Dams are just fine.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation owns and manages the dams, which control water levels from Low's Lake and Hitchens Pond. Those water ways serve as the headwaters of the Lower Bog River, which connects to the Bog River to eventually become the largest tributary to Tupper Lake.

DEC Region 5 spokesman David Winchell said in an email that rumors are circulating regarding the condition of the dams.

Winchell says staff inspected both dams - once last Friday and once on Monday.

"Both dams are intact and in no danger of failing," he said.

Up to now, DEC has not released water from either dam and has intention to do so in the near future.
