Avernus Ortus among acts headlining 'Metal Mania' show at Therapy

PLATTSBURGH- When Dustin Morris' older brother, T.J., moved back to town, so began the formation of the death metal band Avernus Ortus.

The band - which is made up of Dustin on drums and vocals, T.J. on guitar and vocals, and Kevin Dubuque on bass and backing vocals - has developed a sound much along the lines of bands that have primarily influenced their writing, said Dustin, such as Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, Deeds of Flesh and others.

"It can be summed up as a mix of energetic technicality and ferocious aggression," said Dustin. "The style of music we play is very unique in the sense that there are not very many metal bands here in Plattsburgh, let alone 'extreme death metal' bands. We tend to hear from those that come out to our shows that they really enjoy the overall intensity, speed and dynamic integrity of the music."

The band's first show in Plattsburgh was at the former Coffee Camp on Margaret Street back in May 2009, and was one that Dustin said "went very well for us."

"We've always gotten a very strong response after each show we've played," he said. "We hear nothing but positive things from those that attend our performances."

Avernus Ortus has played several venues locally but has also traveled to places like Burlington, Vt., and Worcester, Mass., to have their sound heard. When not playing live shows, the band is finding other ways to get their music to the masses. Already, the three have recorded a couple of "good sounding" demos to submit to record companies here, said Dustin. They're currently in the process of putting together a full-length album.

Most recently, Kevin has been in contact with a promoter from a record company called "Nuclear Blast," planning to submit a demo directly to their European office.

(Editor's Note: Avernus Ortus will play Metal Mania at Therapy Nightclub and Sports Lounge, 14 Margaret St., Thursday, March 31. The show - also featuring bands Wake Up Call, Forever Endeavor, Motion of the Ocean, Signals, and All the Rage - will begin at 6 p.m. Check out Avernus Ortus on Facebook and MySpace for other upcoming shows and information.)
