WESTPORT-Nine members of the Westport Speech and Debate team will be heading to Long Island in a couple of weeks for the state public speaking tournament.
Before then, the team will be holding a pair of events to help raise funds for the upcoming trip that will allow the students to put their skills up against the best in the state.
On Friday, April 1, the members of the team will be sharing their works with the members of the community at a performance and dessert sale night at the school, starting at 6:30 p.m. General admission for the show is $3.
The following day, Saturday, April 2, the students will be hosting a car wash and bake sale at the Westport Volunteer Fire Company from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The cost for a car wash is $5.
The students who are preparing to go to the state tournament said they have enjoyed their year on the team.
"The students have put a lot of time and preparation into these events and performances," Scott Gibbs, advisor for the speech and debate team, said. "I am really excited for everything that the kids have been able to accomplish this year."
"It has helped with my speaking and performing skills," said Alexa Mitchell, who is going to the state event in the original oratory category. "It has been a good experience to be in a group like this."
"It has helped me for the classes where I have to make presentations and talk in front of the class," Delany Sears, who qualified in two events (duo dramatic and dramatic interpretation), said. "It's a really good feeling and exciting to know that I was able to qualify for both."
"It took a lot of hard work and practice to get to this point," said Dorie Souris. "It has been a great learning experience being able to do this."
