Batters Up Bake Shop offering more than your average cake

PLATTSBURGH - When Melissa Frederick decided to open Batters Up Bake Shop, she knew she wanted to offer more than the average bake shop.

"I'm willing to try anything," Frederick said. "I challenge the customers to bring me something that they don't think can be done and then I do it for them."

The recently-opened home-based business on Smokey Ridge Road offers cakes and a full line of baked goods such as pies, cookies, cupcakes and muffins to retail outlets and individuals looking to make any occasion a special one.

Drawing from her 20 years of experience in baking and cake decorating, Frederick uses her creative eye to design "unique, one-of-a-kind cakes" that meet her customers' specifications, using only the highest-quality ingredients.

"Every special occasion deserves a cake that is made to be the centerpiece of that celebration," Frederick said. "If it is for a party, then you want something that is fun and personalized to the party's theme. If it is a wedding, most couples want something that highlights the love and elegance of that special day."

Weddings are particularly one of Frederick's favorite events as they allow her to help others make their special day even more memorable.

"We can offer them cookies for their place settings as well as designing the wedding cake," she said. "Even cupcakes; cupcakes are really big for weddings this year. So, we can design a cupcake tree with a cake on top. That's very popular."

In addition to looking good, the most important thing is to create a memorable confection that all guests can enjoy, added Frederick.

"It has to taste good, look good and be something personal to them for their specific event," said Frederick, who added themed birthday, anniversary, and retirement cakes are among some of her highly-requested confections. "I'm looking for my customers to be very excited. I'm looking for the people at the party to ask where they got their cake."
