Flooding strikes in North Creek

NORTHCREEK-Parts of Old River Road in North Creek were under water Thursday, March 10, forcing many residents to leave their homes and seek shelter elsewhere.

Melting snow and a day of rain caused water to rise in the Hudson River, but was blocked by an ice pack, pushing the water onto roads and above flood levels.

After a declared state of emergency by Supervisor Sterling Goodspeed, North Creek volunteer firefighters shuttled local residents from their homes to several locations. The Alpine Lodge and Inn on Gore Mountain offered a free night of stay for those displaced by the flooding, although it was reported the displaced were staying with friends and family.

Seven homes were evacuated and many occupants were staying with other area residents, as rooms in local hotels began to fill for another ski weekend at Gore Mountain.

Town of Chester Supervisor Fred Monroe also issued a state of emergency order for the Old River Road in Chestertown, adjacent to the bridge over the Hudson River on Route 28 and requested all residents of the location evacuate.

The ice pack could be seen inhibiting the flow of water off the 28N bridge over the Hudson River in North Creek. The rising water had encroached over the train trestle that runs along the Hudson south of the bridge Thursday afternoon.

The ice pack broke over the weekend, sending blocks of ice down behind the powerful flow of the backed-up Hudson River. Down-river roads were closed as a percaustion, according to North Creek fire chief Steve Studnicky.

"The pack flowed evenly," he said. "We closed the 28N bridge as well as bridges in Riverside, Riparius and The Glen."

Old River Road is not open and operating as normal, he said. And residents have returned to their homes to find no real damages.

"We are contining to check traget locations frequesntly, but the worst seems to be over," said Studnicky.
