PORTHENRY-A Mineville woman has been charged with stealing money from her former employer.
Meagan M. Whitman is charged with third-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records relating to the alleged thefts. She was arrested by state police March 2.
Investigators say Whitman, 27, started the clerical scam in August 2008 while she was employed with Bryant Lumber in Port Henry.
It is alleged that she continued the scheme until March 2010 and ultimately stole more than $3,000 from the business.
She has since been fired.
The grand-larceny charge accuses Whitman of stealing anywhere from $3,000 to $50,000, though police declined to release the exact amount believed to have been taken, citing the ongoing investigation.
Authorities were contacted earlier this year after Bryant Lumber officials detected inconsistencies in their financial records.
After being arraigned, Whitman was released on her own recognizance.
She is scheduled to appear in Moriah Town Court at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, to face the allegations.
